In this painting, I reimagine the life and legacy of Ocho Venado Garra de Jaguar (Eight Deer Jaguar Claw) as a warrior, combining the visual traditions of ancient Mesoamerican art, the dramatic composition of a superhero comic-book cover, and my own contemporary painting style. The bold colors, layered textures, fire, smoke, and surrounding warriors create the energy and intensity of battle, while Ocho Venado stands prominently at the center as the commanding figure of the story.
Ocho Venado Garra de Jaguar was a renowned 11th-century Mixtec ruler, warrior, and military leader from Oaxaca, Mexico. His remarkable life and rise to power were preserved in ancient Mixtec pictorial manuscripts, including the Codex Zouche-Nuttall, where his military campaigns, political alliances, marriages, and important events from his life are recorded.
Ocho Venado became known for an extraordinary period of military expansion and political consolidation. The Codex Zouche-Nuttall records 94 conquered places associated with his campaigns. His brothers, Twelve Earthquake Bloody Jaguar and Nine Flower Copal Ball with Arrow, are depicted as loyal companions who accompanied him in warfare.
Ocho Venado is frequently represented wearing jaguar imagery, reflecting the power and warrior symbolism associated with the animal. His political influence also extended beyond the Mixtec region. According to the codices, he formed an alliance with Four Jaguar Face of the Night, a powerful ruler associated with Cholula, and received a turquoise nose ornament, an important emblem of royal authority.
