Taco Mexica

from $73.00

In this intricate narrative work, I reimagine the culinary foundations of Mexico through the lens of Mexica (Aztec) pictography. The composition serves as a visual recipe, meticulously documenting the ancestral "Nixtamalization" process and the spiritual significance of the taco as a communal staple.

The painting is structured in a tripartite layout on the lower half:

The Foundation (Bottom Left): Depicts the alchemy of the tortilla—raw corn, water, and the essential lime (alkaline ash) required for nixtamalization.

The Harvest (Bottom Center): A rich catalog of pre-Hispanic proteins and vegetables, including deer, fish, turkey, rabbit, edible insects, and nopal, prepared for the pot.

The Zest (Bottom Right): An assembly of the "salsa" elements—chiles, tomatoes, salt, seeds, beans, and aromatic herbs like pápalo.

The narrative culminates at the top of the canvas where the mundane act of eating is elevated to the divine. Mixcoatl the god of the hunt and Chicomecoatl, the goddess of corn and Hot Peppers, flank a central feast.

As they pour red and green salsas over the prepared taco, they act as celestial patrons, transforming a daily meal into a sacred ritual of blessing and continuity.
